Why Susan G. Komen’s decision is SOOOO upsetting.

I have a tumor in my left breast.

Not to be confused with a cyst (click here to understand the difference) I leave it because it is benign and surgery ain’t cheap. I don’t worry about it but suffice it to say that breast cancer and treatment for the uninsured (as I was and am as I write this post) is an issue that is close to my heart. Literally.

When I heard that the Susan G. Komen foundation which promises, “To Save Lives and End Breast Cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and and energizing science to find cures.” HAS CUT OVER A HALF A MILLION IN FUNDING to Planned Parenthood which provides LIFE SAVING MAMMOGRAMS to low-income women THEN I LOST MY SHITE.

HOW DOES PULLING 700K IN FUNDING SUPPORT THEIR MISSION STATEMENT (see: “ensuring quality care for all”) AGAIN?!

RIGHT.

IT DOESN’T.

BUT…. it does support SGK’s new Public Policy lead, Karen Handel, who prior to being hired at SGK had publicly promised to cut funding for breast and cervical cancer screenings provided by Planned Parenthood since, in addition to those life saving early-detection screenings, they ALSO provide safe and legal abortions.

WAY TO THROW THE BABY OUT WITH THE BATHWATER FOLKS!

So I am infuriated. Not because the pro-life/pro-choice debate carries on but because it has just cost millions of women the chance to catch cancer early. Early prevention = early cure. Unless you are, oops, WERE one of the women who relied on Planed Parenthood to keep your breast or cervical health in check.

To the folks at The Susan G. Komen foundation: SHAME ON YOU. Shame on you for bowing down to Right Wing Demands and letting an executive hijack early detection screenings that COINCIDENTALLY further her personal anti-choice agenda.

I’d appreciate it if you’d get your stuff together and restore funding to Planned Parenthood immediately. Firing Karen Handel would be AWESOME but really, the priority is getting you back to the part where you served “all” and were “energizing science to find cures”.
